How to save a photo from a video on iPhone

A great moment can last less than a second. Stillcut lets you select a frame from a video and save it as a separate photo, with the original video left in place.

Choose the moment, then the frame

1. Open a video. In Stillcut, choose a clip from Photos or Files. Start with the original recording when you have it, rather than a smaller copy sent through a messaging app.
2. Find the moment. Scrub near the action, then step frame by frame. Compare nearby frames for open eyes, a natural expression, and less movement.
3. Extract and save. Tap Extract, then save the photo to your library or share it. The free tools support single-frame PNG and JPEG export.

What does full resolution mean?

An extracted frame starts with the video’s pixel dimensions. A 3840 × 2160 video contains frames at that size; exporting one does not turn it into a higher-resolution camera photo. Cropping removes pixels, and a sharp export cannot restore detail that was blurred in the recording.

Choose a format for the job

JPEG is convenient for sharing. PNG uses lossless image compression, which can be useful when you want to avoid another lossy save. File sizes vary with the image. Keep the original video if you might want another frame later.
